Field Notes #2

The Course Speed Index: which races are really fast

Not every Hyrox race is equally fast. The Course Speed Index sets each race's field finish against the season benchmark of its division, at 100. This season's fastest Men Open field: 2026 Bilbao, at 86. The slowest: 2026 Bengaluru, at 128. That is a spread of 42 points, measured across 20 races and 45915 finishers.

What is the Course Speed Index?

The index is a race's field finish divided by the season benchmark of the same division, times 100. At 100 the field finished exactly on the benchmark, below 100 it was faster, above 100 slower. The Men Open season benchmark currently sits at 1:30:54, Women Open at 1:37:41.

Each row weighs the field medians of that race's categories; the index sets it against the season benchmark of the same division (100). Lower is faster. Fields under 100 finishers per sex are left out, so a stray finisher on a single-gender race day cannot distort a row.

Why is one race faster than another?

The index measures how fast the field raced, not how hard the course was. A low number can mean short roxzone walks and a fast venue, but just as easily a field with more experienced athletes. Both are real, and the results do not separate them. That is why we publish the index as a measurement, not as a difficulty score.

Does a slow race hurt your result?

Not on a Splitprint. The field comparison on your poster is computed within your own race and your own category, so a slow field does not flatter you and a fast field does not bury you. The index only tells you how your city's field compared with the season.

What is the fastest Hyrox race this season?
Measured on the Men Open field finish, 2026 Bilbao leads this season with a Course Speed Index of 86 against the season benchmark of 100. The full ranking is in the table above.
Is the Course Speed Index a median?
No. Each race's finish weighs the field medians of its categories, and the season benchmark weighs them across races. Both are reference points, and the page says exactly what you are looking at.
Why does Splitprint publish this?
Because nobody else measures the field. Results pages show individuals and coverage shows winners. The index is defined once, on our methodology page, and computed the same way for every race.
