The Roxzone Tax: what transitions cost the field

The roxzone is everything between stations, and the field pays for it every race. This season's benchmark for Men Open is 7:42 of transition time, about 8.5% of a 1:30:54 finish. Women Open pay 6:58. Measured across 29922 finishers over 20 events.

What is the Roxzone Tax?

The Roxzone Tax is the total transition time a field loses between stations in one race. It is the moving you do that is neither running nor working: from the course into a station, from the station back onto the course. It counts toward your finish like every other second, and across a whole field it is remarkably stable: around 8.5% of the finish time in Men Open.

Which category pays the most?

The heaviest transition bill in the current season data sits with Women Doubles: 8:22 per race. The table above weighs field medians across 20 events, so one chaotic venue cannot dominate the picture.

Is a slow roxzone bad?

Not by itself. At Hyrox Utrecht, recreational athletes lost 3:17 more in the roxzone than elites, across 825 results. Part of that is recovery that makes the next station possible, part of it is time leaking away unnoticed. The roxzone is the one split almost nobody tracks, which is exactly why it deserves a number.

How do I see my own Roxzone Tax?

Your official result contains your roxzone as its own split. Put it next to the median of your category in your race and you know whether your transitions were part of your pace or a quiet leak. The free preview shows exactly that, for any race in the official results.

What is a normal roxzone time in Hyrox?
The season benchmark is 7:42 for Men Open and 6:58 for Women Open, weighed across 20 events and 29922 finishers. A benchmark is a reference point, not a median: it weighs the field medians of multiple events.
Does the roxzone count toward your Hyrox finish time?
Yes. The clock never stops. Every second between stations lands in your finish time, which is why the field pays a measurable Roxzone Tax every race.
Why does Splitprint call it the Roxzone Tax?
Because it behaves like a tax: everyone pays it, few people track it. The term is defined once, on our methodology page, and always computed the same way from official results.
